What to do with kids during autumn break 2025?

Autumn break 2025 offers a perfect opportunity for families to connect with nature and wildlife at Ähtäri Zoo. The oldest natural wildlife park in Finland provides an ideal setting for children to explore the wonders of wildlife during their syysloma suomessa (autumn break in Finland). With its 60-hectare forest area showcasing beautiful autumn colours, families can enjoy special wildlife tours, interactive workshops, indoor activities for rainy days, and comfortable accommodation options – all designed to create lasting memories while learning about conservation and endangered species in a natural environment.

What activities does Ähtäri Zoo offer for children during autumn break?

During autumn break 2025, Ähtäri Zoo offers a rich programme of special activities designed specifically for families with children. The highlight is our Wildlife Explorer Programme, which includes guided tours through the forest pathways where children can observe animals in their spacious, natural habitats.

Families can participate in scheduled feeding sessions with zookeepers, where children learn about animal diets, behaviours, and conservation efforts. These sessions typically take place multiple times daily, offering close-up encounters with various species from playful otters to majestic snow leopards. You can explore all available activities on our website to plan your visit.

The autumn-themed exploration activities include:

  • Forest scavenger hunts that teach children about seasonal changes
  • Interactive wildlife tracking workshops where kids learn to identify animal footprints
  • Nature crafts using autumn materials like colourful leaves and pine cones
  • Conservation workshops where children learn how they can help protect wildlife

Many families appreciate our “Junior Zookeeper” experience, where children aged 7-14 can assist staff with simple animal care tasks, making their autumn break both fun and educational.

How can kids learn about endangered species at Ähtäri Zoo?

At Ähtäri Zoo, children have multiple engaging opportunities to learn about endangered species through our interactive conservation education programme specially enhanced during autumn break 2025. Our guided tours focus specifically on threatened species, explaining conservation challenges and success stories in age-appropriate ways.

The Zoo’s educational centre features exhibits designed for different age groups, from colourful, tactile displays for younger children to more detailed information for teenagers. Daily presentations by our conservation specialists highlight our participation in international breeding programmes and explain how these efforts help preserve biodiversity.

Children can participate in hands-on workshops where they:

  • Create enrichment items for endangered animals
  • Learn about habitat protection through interactive games
  • Discover how climate change affects different species
  • Explore practical conservation actions they can take at home

Our “Conservation Passport” activity, where children collect stamps after learning about different endangered species, is particularly popular. Upon completion, they receive a certificate recognizing them as “Wildlife Conservation Champions.” Be sure to check our opening hours and ticket prices to plan your educational visit effectively.

Why is autumn a unique time to visit Ähtäri Zoo with children?

Autumn creates a magical atmosphere at Ähtäri Zoo that offers a distinctly different experience from other seasons. The 60-hectare forest transforms with vibrant red, orange, and gold foliage, creating a spectacular backdrop for wildlife viewing that captivates children and adults alike.

Many animals display interesting seasonal behaviours during autumn, including:

  • Increased activity as they prepare for winter
  • Thicker, more visible fur coats developing on many mammals
  • Changes in feeding patterns that visitors can observe
  • Special seasonal enrichment activities provided by zookeepers

Autumn break typically sees fewer visitors than peak summer season, allowing for a more peaceful experience where children can observe animals without crowds and receive more personalized attention during guided activities and workshops.

The educational value of an autumn visit is significant as children can witness and learn about nature’s seasonal transformations firsthand. They observe how animals adapt to changing conditions, how the ecosystem prepares for winter, and gain a deeper understanding of natural cycles.

The crisp autumn air and stunning scenery make outdoor activities particularly enjoyable, while our heated indoor spaces provide comfortable retreats when needed. This balance of indoor and outdoor experiences makes autumn break at Ähtäri Zoo a perfect family holiday regardless of weather conditions.
