Educational activities for children during fall break

Fall break provides the perfect opportunity for meaningful educational experiences that combine fun with learning. Ähtäri Zoo offers specialised fall break activities (“syysloma tekemistä”) designed to engage children in wildlife conservation while enjoying Finland’s beautiful autumn environment. These educational programmes blend outdoor adventures, animal encounters, and hands-on learning activities that develop children’s understanding of nature, conservation, and environmental responsibility—all while creating memorable family experiences during the school holiday.

What educational activities does Ähtäri Zoo offer during fall break?

During fall break, Ähtäri Zoo transforms into an outdoor classroom with a variety of interactive educational programmes specifically designed for the autumn season. Children can participate in guided forest exploration tours where they learn about Finnish wildlife in their natural autumn habitat, discovering how animals prepare for winter.

Our popular animal feeding sessions allow children to observe and learn about the dietary requirements of different species while watching the animals enjoy their meals. These sessions include educational commentary from our expert zookeepers who explain the animals’ natural behaviours and conservation status.

We also offer creative workshops where children can make animal-themed crafts using natural materials gathered from the forest floor—connecting art with nature education. The educational activities programme includes special themed days focusing on specific conservation topics, offering diverse learning experiences throughout the fall break period.

For those interested in more in-depth learning, our junior zookeeper experiences allow children to shadow staff members and learn about animal care, enrichment, and conservation work first-hand.

How do children learn about conservation through Ähtäri Zoo activities?

Children learn about conservation at Ähtäri Zoo through experiential education that makes complex environmental concepts accessible and meaningful. Our activities are designed around a “learn by doing” philosophy that creates lasting impressions about the importance of protecting wildlife.

During fall break activities, children engage with our international conservation programmes, learning how the zoo contributes to protecting endangered species globally. Through guided tours, they discover the challenges facing different species and the practical conservation actions being taken to help them.

Interactive educational stations throughout the zoo teach children about threats to biodiversity, habitat loss, and climate change impacts on wildlife. These stations use age-appropriate games and demonstrations to make these serious topics understandable for young minds.

Children also participate in hands-on conservation activities like building wildlife habitats (bird houses, insect hotels) and learning about sustainable choices they can make in their daily lives to help protect animals and their environments.

What age groups are the fall break activities suitable for?

Our fall break educational activities are carefully designed to accommodate children of all ages, with programmes tailored to different developmental stages. For preschoolers (ages 3-6), we offer sensory-rich experiences with simplified conservation messages, focusing on building empathy for animals through storytelling and guided observation.

Primary school children (ages 7-12) engage with more structured learning activities that incorporate elements of biology, ecology, and conservation science presented through hands-on experiments, guided exploration, and interactive games that make learning feel like play.

For teenagers (ages 13-17), we provide more sophisticated conservation workshops that explore global environmental challenges and conservation careers, including opportunities to contribute to actual research and conservation projects conducted at the zoo.

Many of our activities are designed for family participation, allowing children of different ages to learn together while parents and guardians can assist younger children as needed. Our educators are skilled at adapting content to ensure meaningful engagement for all participants regardless of age.

How can families make the most of a fall visit to Ähtäri Zoo?

To maximise your family’s educational experience during a fall visit, we recommend planning a multi-day exploration that allows ample time to engage with all the learning opportunities available. The Zoo accommodation package provides an immersive experience where learning continues beyond regular opening hours.

Start by checking the opening hours and ticket prices and planning your visit around scheduled educational activities like keeper talks, feeding sessions, and special fall break programmes. Downloading our educational activity sheets before your visit helps children focus their observations and learning during the zoo journey.

The autumn season offers unique opportunities to observe animals during their pre-winter preparations, with spectacular fall colours providing a stunning backdrop for wildlife watching. The cooler temperatures often make animals more active compared to summer months.

We recommend dressing in layers for changeable autumn weather and bringing along a nature journal for children to record observations, questions, and drawings. This extends the learning experience beyond the visit itself as children can reflect on their notes afterwards.

Don’t rush—the 60-hectare forest environment invites slow exploration, and many of our most meaningful educational moments happen when families take time to observe animals closely and discuss what they’re learning together.

What makes Ähtäri Zoo’s educational approach unique?

What distinguishes our educational philosophy is our commitment to conservation-focused learning within an authentic forest environment. Unlike traditional zoos, our 60-hectare natural forest setting allows animals to live in spacious enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats, providing more authentic opportunities to observe natural behaviours.

Our educational approach emphasises the connections between Finnish wildlife and global conservation challenges, helping children understand both local and international environmental issues. We focus on developing emotional connections to wildlife as a foundation for conservation values, rather than simply presenting facts.

We integrate Finnish outdoor education traditions with modern conservation science, creating a distinctive blend of nature connection and scientific understanding. Our educators are trained in both wildlife biology and experiential education techniques, ensuring scientifically accurate content delivered through engaging methods.

The zoo’s long-standing participation in international conservation breeding programmes for endangered species provides real-world context for learning, allowing children to understand how their visit directly contributes to wildlife protection efforts around the world.
