Snowy Owl

Nyctea scandiaca

The snowy owl is a rare and endangered habitant of Finnish Lapland. Outside the nesting period, snowy owls are sometimes seen farther south.

Traveling thousands of kilometers

Snowy owls can only nest in areas where there are plenty of voles and Norwegian lemmings. Small mammal populations vary in size from one year to the next, so snowy owls sometimes have to travel up to thousands of kilometers to find better hunting grounds.

Conservation status

LC stands for “least concern.” The species is well-known, and the population is abundant or stable. In Finland, this species is classified “critically endangered” (CR).
