European Bison

Bison bonasus

A bison from Europe

The European bison is the largest land-roaming animal living in Europe today. European bison used to live in areas with broad-leaved forests from western Europe all the way to the Caucasus Mountains. However, the bison was a game animal for people, and the last wild European bison was shot in 1927. Today’s European bison are descendants of the 50 European bison living in zoos at the time. Around 1,000 European bison currently live in the wild, and zoo-bred bison are released into the species’ natural habitat in Europe.

Conservation status

Vulnerable (VU). The species is under a high risk of endangerment in the wild.
